Pongal Festival– Bhogi, Surya, Mattu and Kannum Pongal

Pongalis one of the most popular harvest festivals of South India, mainly Tamil Nadu. Pongal falls in the mid-January every year and marks the auspicious beginning of Uttarayan – sun’s journey northwards. Pongal festival lasts for four days.

Bhogi Festival (14th Jan, 2011): Bhogi is the first day of Pongal and is celebrated in honor of Lord Indra. On Bhogi, people clean out their homes and the day is meant for domestic activities. Farmers worship the sun and the earth by anointing their ploughs and sickles with sandalwood paste.

Surya Pongal (15th Jan, 2011): The day is dedicated to the Sun God and is offered boiled milk and jaggery.  Rice is cooked and prepared as a dish called Pongal.

Mattu Pongal (16th Jan, 2011): On this day, Lord Ganesh and Goddess Parvati are worshiped and is dedicated to cattle. The cattle are washed and beads, bells and flower garlands are tied around their necks. They are fed with Pongal and devotees pay their respect to cows by offering prayers.

Kaanum Pongal (17th Jan, 2011): The day is dedicated to the Sun god and elaborate powdered chalk designs of the Sun god are drawn. It is very similar to Rakhsha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj, a festival where women offer prayers for the well being of their brothers.
