“Equality for Women is Progress for All”

International Women’s Day is a day that is entirely dedicated to the women and is celebrated on the 8th of March every year. This day celebrates the spirit of womanhood and honours the achievements and contributions made by the women fraternity across the globe. This day is also referred to as the United Nations Day for Women’s Right and International Peace. The United States even dedicates the entire month of March “Women’s History Month”.

UN Celebrate Women’s Day

It was in the year 1975 that United Nations began to recognise this as a holiday. Moreover, the UN selects a particular theme annually, based on which this day is celebrated across most parts of the world. The theme for the year is selected such that it highlights the social and economic problems faced by women around the world. The theme for the year 2014 is “Equality for Women is Progress for All”.

Women’s Major Role in Society

The celebration of this event differ from region to region, however, the common motive of celebrating this day is to lay emphasis on the significant contributions and accomplishments of the women in the society. Since women form a major part of the society, thus they play a major role in the economic, social and political activities. Therefore, International Women’s Day is observed to recall and praise women’s overall achievements.

Women’s Day Event, Programmes

The International Women’s Day is a special event which is celebrated by people including the women leaders from the business, educational institutions, political, entertainment industry etc. A variety of programmes and events such as seminars, rallies, women parades, debates, speeches, presentations etc. are organised to enhance the worldwide awareness about women, their rights, contributions, importance of education, career opportunities etc. It has been observed that people wear purple ribbon while celebrating this event. Besides other parts of the world, International Women’s Day is also celebrated in India with equal zeal and enthusiasm.
