Celebrate the colourful traditions on Baisakhi

The April 13th or 14th is celebrated as Baisakhi in India and it is a very important day for the people especially in Punjab. This day marks the solar New Year and also is the day when the harvest of the first crop of the year is done. The farmers all over India find relief on this day and enjoy a great festive day with their families and friends. A lot of celebrations are made in towns and villages even though the style of celebration is very different in the cities. People in cities dress their best and go to a religious place, specially the Gurudwara.

The festival of Baisakhi is also very significant to the Sikhs. It was on this day in year 1699 that the tenth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh established the order of the Sikh warriors called Khalsa. With five restrictions on the Beloved Five chosen by the guru which were not having their hair or beard cut, always carry a comb, wear cotton underwear, always carry a sword and wear an iron bangle. The Beloved Five were chosen from the lowest rung of people who were mistreated by Muslims. Sikhs take a dip in the holy tank at a gurudwara. Hindus, on the day of Baisakhi follow the custom of taking a dip in the holy river Ganga.

Colourful celebrations of this day include fairs in the state of Punjab where people get together in colourful clotehs. The traditional dance of Punjab which is Bhangra and Gidda is performed at these fairs to great tunes. People visit the Gurudwara and everyone has a great time on this day of Baisakhi.
