There are unique benefits and challenges to parenting an only child. While you have the ability to be more involved in your child’s life if you only have one child, finding the right balance with your child can be tough. As a parent, you need to learn to work with your child’s unique characteristics in a way that will help them develop into a successful and responsible adult.

Keep the following tips in mind and use them as you raise your only child:

# Tip 1: Set boundaries for your child. Explain to your child how they are to behave. For e.g. the set bedtime is to be followed every day.

# Tip 2: Help your child build friendships with others. Put efforts into creating strong social circles as their friends may become substitutes for their siblings.

# Tip 3: Encourage your child to join group activities. These activities are important not only because it’s a great way to make friends but because the child doesn’t feel as the center of attention or in the spotlight.

# Tip 4: Avoid being critical of your child and lower your expectations for their achievements. Your child will feel the pressure to succeed inherently, so avoid discouraging your child.

# Tip 5: Avoid overindulging your child as this can make her more demanding.

# Tip 6: Let things slip by so that your child doesn’t feel she’s being watched constantly.

# Tip 7: Teach your child to be responsible. Do not clean their room or avoid giving them chores. Give them age appropriate tasks to complete. This will teach them to be responsible.

# Tip 8: Lastly, it is very important that you spend quality time with your child, so that being an only child doesn’t get lonely for her.
