It seems the challenges faced by parents in getting their child’s admission in good schools, were not just enough. To make the matter worse, the Schools in the Capital have blatantly violated the provisions of the RTE Act and the admission guidelines issued by the State Government.
The profiling of parents done by these schools is just an example of the fact that, even a law cannot stop these private schools from making a discrimination in the admission process. Various schools have asked for parent’s occupation or profession while filling the admission form. Schools like Delhi Public School- Mathura Road and R.K. Puram, have awarded points to parents who have participated in Asiad, Commonwealth Games or Olympics. There are others like DPS Vasant Kunj and DPS Rohini, who have allotted 10 points for parents belonging to specific professions.
Another cause of concern is the fact that schools are forcing the parents to buy the prospectus along with the form, which is putting a burden on the pockets of parents. Although the Government has specified, the cost of form should not be more than Rs.25/- the schools are forcing the parents to buy the prospectus for which they are charging up to Rs.500/-. There have been instances where some schools are putting the cross against the names of the persons, who are not buying the prospectus.
In response, six schools in the Capital have received notice from the State Government. These six schools, as named by the State Government, are Summerfields School, Ahlcon Public School, St. Mary’s North Delhi, St. Mark’s Janakpuri, St. Francis De Sales School in West Delhi and DPS Rohini. Most of these schools had asked the parents to disclose their income status, had points for parents profession or had set a date of birth criteria for admission.
